I think I get mastodon servers as an idea, but how does one choose? Should I stay here (picked at random because the person who suggested mastodon to me was on here)? Should I move to aus.social? One of the science labeled ones? Run one myself? Probably not that last one.

@drlachie

From the little I get they are mainly thematic based and do not stop inter-server interraction.

I picked qoto as it is science oriented but many other are also.

The only two things worth noticing about servers is:
- finding people through browsing others "followers" I would only see the one on the same server as mine, hence limitation for finding people.
- server admin have strong power (clear password, moderation, etc.) thus I would suggest to avoid small shady servers
- one can change server if wanted.

Thing may change following this great migration ;)

@strigaud yeah I've been disappointed trying to find people by looking at followers of others, I need to do a crawl on Twitter it seems. I noted the image.sc forum having a small discussion of running a server, that'd be cool if it happened

@drlachie

My take is for now its not really important, people migrate, try, see. We are still in a chaotic phase of discovery.

Later on, convergence toward servers will happen. An Image.sc one would be cool indeed!

@strigaud I'm not chipping in $8 a month to management of the bird site, but would be on board helping with costs with a bunch of like minded image analysis types. We're all pretty trustworthy
