Mixed feelings on NASA’s (@NASA) return to the moon: Shannon Stirone speaks with Leroy Chiao, Lori Garvey, and David Grinspoon about #artemis and the reasons for putting humans in space: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/14/opinion/nasa-moon-artemis.html #nasa
Well meaning lady on the metro just now saw me doing work, charged over to ask what I did for a living, then wondered aloud how someone could possibly get a PhD in a topic (literature), that was fictional, and therefore not real. “It’s not science so what do you do experiments on? And if you study the past [she said, earnestly contemplating] where do you do your fieldwork?” Don’t worry friends,, the public grasp of the #humanities is strong! 😬😭🤟
A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people.
I’m sure North American, Australasian, vehicles are similar.
Sound efficient?

I'm currently having a cuppa and looking out into the garden to see if the squirrels have discovered our new feeder. The last one had a plastic door they would swing aside to access their nuts but one night some mega squirrel ripped it off and since then the magpies have nicked all the food. A wooden one with a metal lift up lid now hangs in its place waiting for the super squirrel to return and try his luck. #SquirrelSunday
Personally, I find it quite astounding (and more than a bit offending) to just boldly deny #Neolithic hunter-gatherer the ability and intellect to carve and move such stones like e.g. at #GobekliTepe.
Which, according all archaeological evidence, they did.

"How about this, in practical terms: For the next three stories an editor plans to assign on 'Sizing up the 2024 field,' or the next three podcasts or panel sessions on 'After the midterms, what’s ahead for [Biden, Trump, DeSantis, etc.],' instead give two of those reporting and discussion slots to under-reported realities of the world we live in now." — James Fallows @jfallows

As good a reason as any to put up a post - My co-author Jo Brück and I radiocarbon dated a bunch of isolated human bones from Bronze Age Britain. We found that they were often anomalously old, suggesting that they had been curated for a few generations before being buried. Our new paper (largely driven by Jo!) delves deeper into what all this might mean in the Late Bronze Age and earliest Iron Age (c.1200-700 BC).
There is rumoured to be one Eurasian #otter for every mile of coastline here on #Mull so that adds up to over 300 otters.
That said, they are still difficult to see at times, and usually demand good field-craft to get close to.
I have enjoyed numerous fantastic encounters with otters over the years, on workshops with clients, alone and in this case, with a friend.
It was #octopus for lunch for this female otter.
An incredibly good thread, so true for me as a writer & emerging author over past 10 yrs.
Plus so much relevant also to the #archaeology communities I'm part of: there's nothing else like this place for communication and we need to value & fight for it.

Why I became an #archaeologist: It's about those little details suddenly bringing back voices, and people, from the past:
"Uh, how in Ptah's name are we supposed to lift this giant huge stone here in the quarry?"
"Ok, wait. Let me make this quick sketch here for you ..."

Since there was interest, I have set up a Google Form/Sheet for Earth Scientists on Mastodon.

Interested in #geology and #EarthScience and want people to find you? Add your name.
However, please do not add anyone who is not you without explicit permission - some people might prefer to be discovered more organically, or not at all.
To get really niche, is there a hashtag for archaeological sherd-botherers out there so we can find each others posts on the subject? #archaeoceramics and #archaeopot draw a complete blank. Am I missing something?
