We look back at ancient democracy and like to see something akin to ours, as if we’re part of a tradition moving from Solon through George Washington to our “I voted” stickers
But, in reality. We do what we do, and we need to protect our vote if we want to keep it

Whether you’re waiting in line to vote or waiting online for the results…
It’s a good time for a #thread about the #Archaeology of Athenian Democracy

Along with Irish archaeology, one of my other obsessions is with puffins. I love them, not only are they cute and characterful, but they are really hardy.
These Saltee Island puffins will be most likely out in the far Atlantic at the moment. They'll spend the winter out there, alone, their bright bills and feet turned dull. Before spring approaches and their colour comes back, returning all the way back to the same burrow and partner they left.
Intro post: I'm a professor of #Biology at the #UniversityOfWashington. My training is in #EvolutionaryBiology, #BehavioralEcology, #PopulationGenetics, and #Epidemiology. I did lots of work in #Bibliometrics and #NetworkTheory. I teach #DataLiteracy. These days I spend a lot of time thinking about the spread of #Misinformation, the #ScienceOfScience, and #PhilosophyOfScience. I do a lot of #BirdPhotography and love #ravens, #crows, and all #corvids.
For your trouble, here's a perfect crow.

I hope you’re following the work David Wengrow and team are doing on the ancient Ukrainian city of Nebelivka. Fully the size of medieval London by *3200BC*, comprised “of self-governing districts…with assemblies for decision making,” Nebelivka is forcing us to rewrite the history of cities, and to question especially the standard narrative of primordial state formation. The state just isn’t as central to our experience as we were taught it was. #anarchism #municipalism #urbanism #archaeology
Topped that last one. This is more even with lots of detail.

Too often, I hear people say that if you have a chronic mental health challenge, you shouldn’t go to grad school. This doesn’t have to be true. The key is to choose a supportive program and mentor and proactively manage your condition. You belong and can be successful.

#Archaeology. In a war zone.
This is both, utterly devastating and bravely outstanding at the same time. 😔😦

The ranks of TDF unite people of many civil specialties, including archeologists.
While constructing a defense line, the soldiers of the 251 TDF battalion discovered and preserved previously unknown archeological artifacts and were featured in the @archaeologyEAA@twitter.com publication.

From the archaeologist's field #sketchbook:
These depictions of leaping #foxes from the 10th millennium BCE site of #GobekliTepe (Turkey) take up a key role in our understanding of Pre-Pottery #Neolithic #iconography.
These are indeed not simply depictions of animals - apparently these are meant *hunting* animals. Hunters among hunters?
@kawulf You've been one of my favorite accounts for quite a while and it's great to see you here!
@raphaelboffin Thank you for all these fantastic posts! I quit my PhD the first time after 9 mos. because of crippling depression and wasn't sure if I would ever go back. I ultimately did 3 years later and that time off was one of the best decisions I ever made. I went back to the same department and supervisor who was my mentor, champion, and friend throughout it all. Quitting does not equate failure. 👍
When depression says you're all alone, know there are people who care about you.
When depression says you don't deserve healing, know that you are worth it.
When depression says you're the only one, know that you're surrounded by millions.
Depression lies.

@owillis so glad to see you here
This is a really insightful interview with @Gargron, the founder of Mastodon. His main disagreement with the bird app is around contrasting ideas of free speech. There’s a “strange dichotomy,” he says, that makes Mastodon what it is: on the one hand, more decentralized, more democratic, and, on the other—and perhaps paradoxically, if you’re used to the capitalist, top-down model of social media—safer. Worth reading if you want to understand the ethics/philosophy behind this platform we’ve all chosen to use.
We're hiring a senior editor at Scientific American to help run our opinion, commentary & analysis coverage. Thanks for applying or recommending the job to people you think would be good candidates. https://careers.springernature.com/job/New-York-Senior-Opinion-Editor%2C-Scientific-American/866115301/
Twitter was really useful for finding people to write about. I’d often stumble across incredible stories of discovery, innovation and leadership. I hope #ScienceMastodon can be the same. If you come across extraordinary, inspirational #WomenInSTEM / researchers from other historically excluded groups, please let me know! #TwitterMigration
