I was just reading through @pluralistic’s latest thread, sending the reading links he includes to pocket where they will be synched to my kobo for later - when I realised another fundamental difference from Fowlsite. Masto has become a major source of learning for me in the way Twitter *was* but hasn’t been for years. Interesting people giving me jumping off points into culture I would struggle to find on my own.

@pluralistic @potatogunkelly I went to the bird site and got hooked on learning interesting things to later explore on my own. I met people with expertise, humor and compassion. I blocked the trolls and haters relentlessly. That is why I liked the bird site initially. The hate there has become awful but I also got tired of the relentless follow trains. It was as if people followed for the sake of following. In all the following, they forgot to offer any real thoughts.

@browncarol @pluralistic it was like that for me too at the beginning. Much less so at the end. There was a small, focused infosec community that was great to learn from, but it never lead off on tangents for me like this place does. It’s like a library of people
