Alright class! This week we will work on strengthening the connection between Hangul characters and the sounds they represent. Material is here: https://www.howtostudykorean.com/unit0/unit0lesson1/
From what you all have show me already, I do not think I have much insight to add for this first lesson.
Over the course of the week I would like you to do the exercises in videos in the linked pages (4th paragraph). There are 6 of them and they add up to about 20 minutes.
I will schedule sever other assignments to be posted throughout the week.
Some vocabulary, just because
-----------------
네 -- Yeah, ok, yes
아니요 -- No
안녕하세요 -- 안녕 (health, well-being) + 하세요 (you do (polite imperative), please do, do you?) = Hello
감사합니다 -- 감사 (gratitude) + 합니다 (I do, I am doing) = Thank you
죄송합니다 -- 죄송 (apology, feeling sorry or ashamed) + 합니다 (I do, I am doing) = I'm sorry as in "I apologize," not as in "That sucks, I'm sorry"
산생님 -- Teacher (me)
이 -- This, as in "this one here." Think of the French suffix "-ci"
그 -- That, as in "that one by you." The generic "that." Think of the French "là."
지 -- That, as in "that one over there." Used to indicate something distant from both speaker and hearer. Think of the French "la-bas":
"""
...
— Eh ! qu’aimes-tu donc, extraordinaire étranger ?
— J’aime les nuages… les nuages qui passent… là-bas… là-bas… les merveilleux nuages!
"""
--L'étranger, Charles Baudelaire, 1869
무지개 -- Rainbow (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZSDXG6IMVA)
불꽃놀이 -- 불 (fire) + 꽃 (flower) + (놀이) play, game = fireworks (감시힙니다, 모모! https://kpop.social/@momo/110595763439246652)
For a little weekend assignment: Reply here with a word, written in Hangul and tell us something about it. It can be your favorite word, the last Korean word you learned, or just a word you want to talk about. Tell us what in means in English and tell us something interesting about. That can be something you find amusing or confusing about it, something that helps you remember the word, or anecdote about the word; anything you'd like to share about it.
@tdhssh first I gotta learn korean, now french?
@tdhssh 우유 is milk and its fun to say, its one of my favorites. Also thought that was gonna be a link to gugudan's "Rainbow" (this is also one of my all time favorite stages) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XBWia9CQNQ
Ah! Kang Mina and the Distractions!
One just got to me first, and I can be loyal to fault.
@tdhssh charles so real for that 😔 🌤️
"겨울" means winter and really sounds like it could be a name for the underworld.
"붐" means spring (the season) like in 박붐 of 2NE1 fame
The word for autumn isn't as cool.
I looked these up because the word for summer, "여름," is really fun to say.
The word for autumn isn't cool like the others.
@dogfox @tdhssh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6XSmVCFiuY excuse me gaeul isn't as cool????
@tdhssh oh i almost forgor to post a word!!!!! i love the compound words like 물 (water) 고기 (meat) = 물고기 (fish)
spoilers there's a lesson in that site where the vocab is like
쥐 > rat 🐀
박쥐 (derived from "밝" bright ≃ bright eyed rat) > bat 🦇
다람쥐 (derived from "달리다" to run = fast rat) > squirrel 🐿️
@tdhssh also!!!!!!!! here's some of the first words i learned
원숭이 > monkey 🐒
엉덩이 > butt
빨간 > red 🍎 (adj. form)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTXCgR93zC8 and the first sentence i understood was the chorus to this it's a reference to a nursery rhyme about red monkey butts i think
I think that's what she's going for, really.
@ShaMyouiMo @tdhssh don't watch it it says you have to be 19 at the beginning!!
@tdhssh are you age-shaming @ShaMyouiMo, @momo ? 👀
@SuitedUpDev @momo I feel so age shamed
@ShaMyouiMo @momo I can totally understand that 😭
@ShaMyouiMo @SuitedUpDev haha yeah!! imagine being 15 i would hate to be 15 and do it right this time!!!!
@momo @ShaMyouiMo Momo! Stop it! Be nice.
@momo @SuitedUpDev Well I don't need to work

Star student status upheld!
⭐
You don't have to apologize for doing extra work. However for my own education, can you tell me what that second character in Momo's family name is? I have seen that consonant scribbled like that before but am not sure what it is. Is it "ㄹ"?
Also: good strategy picking a song I will be too busy bopping out to to check your work carefully!
@tdhssh 네ㅔㅔ에ㅔ it's cause the stroke order here is messed up so you can just sorta do it in one without having to keep bringing your hand to the left
감사합니다!
@tdhssh star plus!!!!!!!! 🌟
@tdhssh
"아니요" and "네" were the first Korean words I learned from the dramas. I would have bet anything that they were written "안요" (two sylables) and "데."
