@tdhssh

Oh yeah, this thing

Minzy -- 민지 💪
Sana -- 사나
Mina -- 미나
Momo -- 모모
Jihyo -- 니효 🤩
Jeongyeon -- 졍연 ❤️
Dahyun -- 다현
Chaeyeong (or -young) -- 채영
Nayeon -- 너연
Tzuyu -- 쯔위 ☺️

You guys have been doing so well with your Hangul that I think we can skip over unit 0, lesson 2 and go straight to lesson 3.

howtostudykorean.com/unit0/uni

This is about dipthongs and double letters, which will wind up being very confusing if do not cover them specifically.

It also makes it clear that "ㅐ" and "ㅔ" are both pronounced the same. That is why the first syllable of Chaeyoung's name (채) and the word for "yes" (네) both rhyme with "way" or "weigh" in English.

Please review the lesson and do the exercises linked therein.

Bonus Tidbits
--------------------------------
The name 쯔위 (💖 !) has a double letter in it's first syllable and a dipthong in its second in an attempt to transliterate her name from Chinese.

The consonants ㅅ,ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅌ,ㅎ, and ㅆ appear as the last consonant in a syllable (as in 맛있는 = "delicious"), they are pronounced "ㄷ"

"ㄸ", "ㅃ", and "ㅉ" are never used as final consonants.

@ShaMyouiMo

It's kind of brilliant! It introduces them with their name and something to remember them by, reminds you of their title tracks, and makes all kinds of puns, all in two minutes.

It's quite a dense little piece of literature, in spite of being so fun and goofy.

Well, I have my computer more-or-less functioning again. However, along with many happy memories, I have brought a cold back from my trip. I will look at your idol list and prepare another lesson over the course of this week. It also time to organize our first (online) meetup! Expect some planning posts soon.

But, to keep your appetites up, I will share this tidbit I came across while filling some shocking gaps in my TWICE library.

According to whoever did this annotation to the lyrics of The TWICE Song, the ending "-지" (as begins "지효") can be used as a verb suffix to mean "*verb*, right?" Which our girls turn into a very witty piece of wordplay.

Just think: if we keep working at this, entire new kinds of puns will be available to us.

@dwarf

Those vowels romanized as dipthongs really really aren't. "ㅓ" is way more like the "o" in "son" as I say it than I would say "eo."

As I should have expected, recovering from this hard drive crash is taking longer than expected...

Everyone do your list of idols without looking them up (@momo, I have yours already) and discuss in the review thread. I will check back in on Sunday.

죄송합니다, class...

Bad news, class: you teacher's hard drive died last night. The lesson post for this week will be delayed by a few days.

Until then, help each other learn in the review thread!

End-of-week review!

I want to begin by saying to everyone:

고생하셨습니다!

I am very pleased with all of your hard work!
@dwarf , will you be handing in more of the assignment? I will be happy to look at it in the next day or so.

At this point, you should all be able to sound out/write down words in Hangul, provided there are no tricks (e.g. a "ㅆ" at the end of syllable being pronounced like "ㄷ"). I think this is marvelous progress!

Please reply to this post with something you learned or observed about Korean while doing this weeks lessons/assignments and/or a question you still have about Korean. Please do not be shy about discussing these with your classmates!

@tdhssh 네ㅔㅔ에ㅔ :arinscream: :arinscream: :arinscream: it's cause the stroke order here is messed up so you can just sorta do it in one without having to keep bringing your hand to the left

@momo

I just noticed that he cutesy bullshit in your lyrics is actually there to help me find my place in the song when I have the video on!

Pretty AND practical.
⭐+

@dogfox, are you paying attention? That is how it is done.

@momo

Star student status upheld!

You don't have to apologize for doing extra work. However for my own education, can you tell me what that second character in Momo's family name is? I have seen that consonant scribbled like that before but am not sure what it is. Is it "ㄹ"?

Also: good strategy picking a song I will be too busy bopping out to to check your work carefully!

@tdhssh all assignments for the week!!!!! :arinscream: ik you cancelled the second one sorry i just saw that

lyrics are to the firework song > youtube.com/watch?v=Vn89o1PIgv :deerstickblob: :sparkling_stars: it's the prettiest lyrics????

Mid-week mini-assignment:

###### This assignment is canceled and will be posted later. #######

Without looking any of them up, write (or type) the names of 10 idols in English and Hangul.

######## You are all working very hard already and I am very proud of you!!! #######

@SuitedUpDev @momo

Which does mean mean I need you to keep piping up like this, just to be clear.
