I'm reeling at the things people think that accounts with large numbers of followers do.

One recent claim: `Seekers of "influence" (the "broadcasters") usually immediately mute new followers they deem unworthy of interaction'

If I could make this assessment in 20 seconds, hour after hour after hour, it would take me SIX MONTHS of working full time to do this for my (ex-)twitter and mastodon accounts.

People, high follower accounts aren't out to get you. They just got followed. That's it.

I'm 100% on board with the idea that a healthy social media ecosystem may not have the sort of power-law distribution of follower counts that we observe today.

Just this morning I wrote a long thread about this and about limiting follower counts to avoid these dynamics. Guess what: that was elitist and exclusionary too. Who am I to choose who follows me?

The problem is, it's hard to have it both ways. How do you BOTH allow anyone to follow whoever they want AND prevent high follower accounts?

@ct_bergstrom I think at this point folks are just constantly outraged and it makes me tired a lot

@tonic Yep. I'm all for being outraged at the state of the world. Directing it toward follower count ratios on mastodon is probably not the best use of one's energies.
