Lovecraft’s character being so violently opposed to modernism is a big reason for the fascination and why he towers so large. Tolkien too actually, as a kind of more hopeful and Catholic spin in contrast to Lovecraft’s pessimism and atheism. It makes their works and mythology stand out where so many others are forgotten and liberals and jews desperate to pervert them.

Lovecraft writes as though money, sex, and women don’t exist.

I’m beginning to truly understand his popularity

All attempts to inject Lovecraftian fiction with sexuality are abject failures according to Houellebecq because the chief aim is to induce fascination.

If we are strict in our definition of Lovecraftian I agree with this. I can think of one example though where sexuality is essential and that’s in a film that was created by a writer and artist who were big Lovecraft fans: Alien. It works here however because a big theme is sexuality as Alien and Other.

Lovecraft refused to go to Cincinnati.

He knew the eldritch culinary evil that lay in wait there.
