Every single advertiser is about to drop Twitter in the next 48 hours. Person creates fake Nintendo Twitter account, pays $8, gets verified immediately and within 2 hours, all their sh**posts go viral. Real Nintendo account gets spammed with complaints. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/1590476929294946304
Great article about the terrible state of the night sky: https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/satellite-constellations-are-an-existential-threat-for-astronomy/
With commentary from a couple #astrodon members (that I know of): @planet4589 and @megschwamb
News for the federal excellence strategy in Germany. Interesting read https://www.jmwiarda.de/2022/11/04/weniger-als-angek%C3%BCndigt-mehr-als-bef%C3%BCrchtet/
I'm an astronomer currently fighting for regulation and better engineering of satellites (particularly Starlink) so that the night sky isn't ruined for everyone: https://theconversation.com/soon-1-out-of-every-15-points-of-light-in-the-sky-will-be-a-satellite-170427
I also have super cute baby goats!
Now also on astro-ph: Magnetic fields and relativistic electrons fill entire galaxy cluster led by A. Botteon https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.01493 @franco_vazza
I think these intro posts are great. I am retooting(?) almost every STEM intro post I'm coming across with the faint hope that it'll contribute towards building a community of people with mutually aligned interests who are spread across this chaotic multiverse.
It's also pretty surprising that we don't have a physics-centric instance yet.
If you're in the #twittermigration, time to change some habits.

There's no code spying on your behavior to drive "engagement." Your experience here is entirely in your hands.
Also, it's totally cool to unfollow people here who don't quite fit what you're looking for. No one cares. Personal "brands" and influencers aren't really a thing here.
The profile image is an actual screenshot in the true meaning of the term: smartphone photo of a vim session of a PHOENIX stdout file on my laptop. Unfortunately, I don’t have a chain printer (for which the original output was designed decades ago) to take a photo of a hardcopy … although I do have some a bit less ancient dot-matrix printers in my home office. :-) In fact, I don’t think I have printed a PHOENIX stdout file in at least 30 years.
Here are the latest 3D radiative transfer benchmark results as PNGs. The PBC run in a Cartesian coordinate box with periodic boundary conditions in x and y (“horizontal”) and the spherical run is a sphere in a 3D spherical coordinate system (bot used for validation). The “x@y” notation indicates x MPI (or GPUs) with u OpenMP thread each.
Btw kudos and thanks to all @Mastodon creators and developers, who created a wonderful platform and patiently waited for sheeps like me to join!
The new PHOENIX model atmosphere code account is @Phoenix1D3D. I will toot news on code and results there. Infrequently....
Went to take a look over at the other place.
A tweet reply from Thierry Breton to The New Emperor saying that Twitter will have to follow EU regulations on social media has attracted a deluge of cult fanboys screaming “You’re against free speech! Everyone hates the EU! Let the innovators fly!”
Tigger’s view on how it’s going 😾
First impressions of mastodon
+ easy to handle
+ edit button
+ seems to have real momentum at the moment
- some people seem to have trouble finding you
- will need to get used to hashtags again
