Let's get real about something. The last four scientific journal pages I looked at, when I looked at their open access fees I sighed and closed the page. The last one I saw was nearly $10,000. Everybody on the fediverse will bitch about you, the authors, and scientists if you source a scholarly article that doesn't have an open PDF somewhere but you have to understand what an effing bind we're in here. If I could fix this I would've

@grimalkina just want to say I would never think that, and I'm a science journalist who's having to find access to things. I don't ever blame the scientists. It makes me upset to know others do that.

@aetataureate I really appreciate hearing that. I probably encounter a lot of FOSS culture in the fediverse and it feels like people genuinely do not know the details of the process and constraints and omg, so many people in software act like we have so much more money in science than we do

@grimalkina I don't think they know open access has a fee at all and that, of course, scientists can't restrict their work to the small fraction of journals that are open access. And yeah tbh the reactions on here to a variety of things are bafflingly ignorant haha.

Well it doesn't make sense to them. Their thinking is that the author would obviously retain copyright on their work. It's absurd to them that anyone would give away their rights just to be published in a paper journal and then have to buy them back.

And it is absurd.
