Something I find mildly interesting is how video games seem to have gotten a lot slower paced over time.

Just for example, if you look at FPS games, movement speed and damage output : health ratio are both way down, with "realistic" shooters being an exception on damage, but those also have relatively glacial movement speeds.

And for both "realistic" and cartoon-y shooters, popular game modes are slower paced and have more downtime than the default multiplayer game modes for early shooters.

Is it possible that the old FPSs you're thinking about are predominantly PC games? Whereas the big games of today are mostly console-based and controller-first.

Also, yeah, I'll admit it: we're not getting any younger...

@werner58 That makes sense, but this happened before shooters were really designed with consoles in mind, e.g., look at movement speeds for Doom, Doom 2, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3.
