@evilrooster Cool.

It's bad enough when it's an alphabetical list of the country names, especially when you scroll as quickly as possible to the bottom to find "United Kingdom", only to discover you need "Great Britain", or it's near the top "for convenience" .

@likesohushhush Just remembered that 4hrs is significant. If you have not been admitted or discharged at that point, A&E has officially "failed to meet its target". So you should be pleased that A&E performed well on that occasion 🙄.

In some hospitals they have a special wards managed by A&E, but ABSOLUTELY NOT (oh, no) A&E, to which you are admitted - it happened to me a couple of times. Again, target met!

Where would we be without government targets to monitor performance?

The really remarkable thing isn't just that #Microsoft has decided that the future of #search isn't links to relevant materials, but instead lengthy, florid paragraphs written by a #chatbot who happens to be a habitual liar - even more remarkable is that #Google agrees.

If you'd like an essay-formatted version of this thread to read or share, here's a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:

Some people believe there's no purpose to "liking" something on Mastodon since it doesn't affect any algorithm.

Not the case.

It does something incredibly valuable: it acknowledges people.

Which is incredibly powerful, and is all the more important *because* it's not connected to gaming any algorithm.

By liking something on Mastodon, you are doing it honestly -- without any agenda at play other than that you like it.

So go ahead. Click that like button for its own sake.

@atomicpoet Equally, I'd say don't follow the advice of boosting for the sake of being nice to the poster, or to create more activity on Mastodon. Do it only if you really think your followers would appreciate it.

One thing I hate about FB, and increasingly Twitter, is the vast quantity unsolicited posts that get shoved in font of me.

@simonjwoolf First thought was "but isn't Areni a grape variety?", then "the definition is a very high bar, and rather pretentious".

At the other end of the pretense spectrum is Tesco, where some time ago fine wine was anything over a tenner - 10 GBP. I think there is happy medium somewhere.

@paka Great picture, but don't dogs usually jump with front legs stretched forwards

@ColinTheMathmo To me (from England) it is clear that the man caught the train. However, I would be more likely to express it as "just managed to catch the train".

@ajsoley @ColinTheMathmo @robinhouston To me those usages DO mean "nearly", but in the example in the question the man DID catch the train. Don't ask me "why". I speak British English (from England)

@ColinTheMathmo See the penultimate paragraph here. It is not exactly a grain, like in wood, but the orientation of the deposition layers.

"If you are like me: fascinated by, or even just curious about, ancient winemaking methods and how they persist into modern times, or if you have a specific interest in talha wines, you really need this book. You should also be keeping in touch with Paul on his website Wine Disclosures (and check the archives of my blog). If on the other hand you are not so fascinated…. well, maybe you should be 🙂"

@bradl My favourite index entry was in an old dBase programming manual - actually two entries. Sadly I can't remember the precise details, but the entries were something like

Infinite loop: see "Hanging"

Hanging: see "Infinite loop"

@likesohushhush I agree 100% with you. But I'm sure she would be quick to point out that it should be about her - it's the science, and what we do about it. Go Greta! 🙂
