This blog describes exactly why I think python should be used more often over more "performant" languages snarky.ca/programming-language

I have been using Git a long, long time. I have worked on Git clients and libraries. At some places I've worked, I am the person folks go to when they need Git help.

And yet, only today I learned you can pass -m to commit twice (or more) and it will do the right thing of making each successive message a new paragraph (which is useful for the convention of a short summary as a single first line and following paragraphs as a more detailed message).

One person can only do the best work that person can do. When the whole team works on the story as an ensemble, you get the best work the entire team can do.

@allenholub People should also arriv strive to write code that is easy to understand. That's where DDD really shines.

🚨 Heroku free tier warning 🚨

Heroku will start deleting apps on their old free tier on November 28th 2022 - that's Monday coming up

If you have old projects that you need to archive this weekend is the time to be doing it

(Not a great time to find out that the accounts you created to help out various non-profits a few years ago can't be signed into anymore due to changes to the Heroku/Salesforce login flow...)

Fascinating to see tech people learn that setting up a Mastodon server, keeping it secure, paying the bills for hosting and the 24/7 devops...

...is the easy part.

Proper steering of a community and keeping tabs on moderations is 95% of the work.

Don't start a server if you're not willing to learn and do that.

Design Work Principles:
1. No designer works (walks) alone.
2. Don't complain (moan), fix it!
3. Be deliberate and deliberate all things

It's ridiculous how #TDD allows you to prototype code without having a solution in mind.

Defining a unit test for the expected behaviour, before actually starting to think how to implement the logic is so liberating.

"But how can we write tests first if we don't know what the code's supposed to do?" isn't the slam-dunk argument against TDD you think it is

Huge fan of the Reverse Pomodoro (five minutes of work, 25 minutes of lying on my back in existential despair)

Ash's golden rules of "no look consulting". These things are true In any organization:
- you have too much work in progress
- you are building stuff that no one will use
- your testing is bad that's not the real problem

The carbon footprint of the software industry -is- pretty big. But how does a software company actually define its sustainable development goals? @alex_schl #AgileTD

"We need transparency for the energy consumption of software. As we see on a car's dashboard how much energy/fuel is consumed, we should know how resource efficient a software/functionality is." Max Schulze @AgileTDZone

I've seen a lot of white folks suggest new Black users change instances if they have a bad experience on their first Mastodon server.

Why should that be the default expectation? I understand that bad actors will always be there to create accounts and instances to harass folks.

It is incumbent on us, as anti-racist white folks, to find ways to prevent these bad actors from making our spaces unwelcoming to new Black users. It's a failure of imagination otherwise.

A battery filled with algae is somehow managing to power this computer for months: newscientist.com/article/23195

No-one's quite sure what's going on. Possibly the algae is serving as the medium catalyzing the interaction between the anode and cathode in the battery.

Except research shows the anode isn't degrading, which suggests ...

... the *algae* is producing the electrons.

Some thoughts on this in my blog post here, item 6: clivethompson.medium.com/lavaf

@shanselman As soon as someone finds a client (mobile and desktop) which remembers the last read toot and starts the timeline there, please let me know.

#Andor folks. It's that rare gem with it all. Story, acting, cinematography, costumes, design. It's stunning. It's Star Wars like you've never seen it. The care taken in every shot is both abundantly clear & effortless at the same time. It's true cinema TV. I know I'm gushing but I genuinely find myself just staring sometimes. It's beautiful.

This site makes me feel guilty about the fact I didn’t let mastodons on the Ark.
