PSA: If you're using Windows Backup with a network share to backup your Windows 98 SE retro PC, it'll stop at 4GiB and insist you swap disks and won't be appeased by moving the .qic file from the far end. Probably best to partition your drive into volumes of 4GiB or less for simplicity, FAT32 or not. (And leave compression on to ensure there's enough room in the file for the backup metadata.)

I managed to get CryptAcquireContext() working.

Now #Curl fails further down the connection attempt.
I think I'll give up (for today?). #Curl and #Win98 seem to live in totally different universes...

In other news: if I fake the return value of SOCKET_WRITABLE(), then CryptAcquireContext() fails on win98.

WHY is it easier to get a TLSv1.2 connection on plain #MSDOS than on #win98???

I managed to fix the #SQLite issue.

So far the #curl problem eludes me.
Curl checks if the connection is established using select().

On #Win10 this eventually returns 1, on #win98 it always returns 0.

I checked with a self made endpoint and the connection is established. Only cf_tcp_connect()->SOCKET_WRITABLE()->Curl_socket_check()->Curl_poll()->our_select()->select() never sees it

.oO(#win32 and #win98 are REALLY testing my patience here. #DOStodon works fine with the win32-port of #DOjS on #Win10, but #SQLite3 and #Curl fail on #Win98)

Trying to install 98 on my smol fujitsu retro PC.

Magic command was "SETUP.EXE /NM /IS"

I'm hitting a bit of a wall here. Other sources tell me these DLLs are part of the VSC 2015 redist, but that is not available for win98!

Is there a way to target #win98 with #mingw?
Am I missing something obvious?

This weekend I tried to compile #Allegro for #Win9x with #mingw.
I was able to get the examples running on #Win10, but when I copied them over to my #Win98 box they crashed with an illegal instruction.
That happened because mingw on #Ubuntu is targeting i686 and I have an AMD K6-II in my test rig.
Then I tried compiling mingw myself with i386 as a target, that failed because the 386 is missing an instruction that is needed by the runtime library.
I got it working with i486, though.

Well, #Win98 on the #Geode board sucked.
Running #FreeDOS is no solution either (no packet driver for the RTL8110 and no sound).

This is why I now try to compile a bespoke #Linux using #BuildRoot https://buildroot.org/

I already booted into a first test image, now I'm going crazy with the packages to install and recompile

I think they spelled "Windows 98" wrong?

I just had a sudden but very strong memory of the time I upgraded my #win98 machine (which was upgraded from #Win95) to #Win2K. That was a special #os for me. It was neat because for the first time it seemed like #windows might be capable of stability and usefulness. I really liked the trash icon.

Funny enough, years later, I downgraded a server from w2k to w95, and hosted a swath of early web2.0 stuff on it via Apache.

Good times.
