@virtualbri I think whether or not it's easier is not really the issue. obviously making mastodon.social the default is easier, but there are other ways to make it easier that don't bias towards centralization

the app could make a concise schema that breaks down what the different aspects of moderation are and use it to make a series of questions new users can answer to narrow down the list of available instances.

the app could rephrase the "choose my own" option to make it clearer that it's not for people building their own servers, but that there are alternatives that are as good or better for some and no more complex to start using
