I'd like to run 3D fluid dynamics simulations and visualizations with open source software. On the order of 1k x 1k x 1k cells, preferably GPU accelerated and preferably not nvidia-proprietary.
What systems should I be reading about to learn how to do this (and to figure out what my next questions should be)?
Any finished examples out there?

@eqe maybe obvious, but are you talking for some engineering or scientific application or for art/visuals? I know Blender has pretty good fluid dynamics now, but IDK how physically accurate it is.

also I'll mention Sibernetic which is a SPH sim (another is mentioned in the Stack Exchange post). I know the guys that made it and, having hacked around a bit on the code, I think it's fairly comprehensible. it is for a specific biological application though, so I offer it as a comparison more than a solution.
