(let's see if I do this thread right)

Peter Wehner, writing for the NY Times, said: “Republicans are distancing themselves from the former president not because they see him as a threat but because they view him as a loser. This is hardly comforting. They are turning on Mr. Trump for the wrong reason. Their moral compass is still broken.”

"Their moral compass is broken" is another way to say, "They prefer a reactionary, regressive, anti-democratic government."

(Nope. I can't figure out how to enlist it. DANG thread fail.)

They realize that Trump can't deliver what they want, but the GOP won't (and can’t) stop being anti-democratic because too much of their base consists of anti-democratic forces.

The thing to remember is these anti-democratic forces are homegrown and have always been with us.

In the 19th century, they were in favor of slavery and opposed to women's rights.
In the early 20th century, they were in favor of racial segregation.
