In case you hadn't heard, #NorfolkSouthern derailed a chemical train in #EastPalestine, #Ohio, after dragging a "hot box" malfunctioning axle for 20 miles, braking too late on old-tech brakes that might have been ECP if #Buttigieg had reinstated a rule, revoked by #Trump , requiring brake upgrades on flammable-hazard trains. The fire released phosgene gas and HCl acid. The rail laborers, whose strike was quashed in Dec, were warning us of this. NS offered $25k compensation.

If it required a president to end the rule, how can a Secretary reinstate it?

@inklings A president can use executive orders. A cabinet official has to use the regulatory rulemaking authority delegated to their office, by whatever process is required. Or Biden could have done it by executive order.

So you’re blaming Biden & buttegieg for what trump did. Nice.

@inklings @log doesn’t sound like Log is letting Trump off the hook, either. I think there’s plenty of blame to go around, and obviously Trump directly caused this problem, since no broad upgrades B&B could have mandated ~2 months ago would even be done by now, practically speaking. But it is still worth noting that the issue was called to their attention and they passed up a clear opportunity to address it. Because this WILL happen again.
