the ukraine war quietly killed the american claim of "troop readiness standards don't matter because in the future war will just be pushing a button"
@Moon It dramatically increases the risk of future nuclear exchanges because it's painfully obvious that the USA would get blown the fuck out in a direct conventional war against either China or Russia.

@caekislove @Moon it's been painfully obvious ever since they lost a war against a much smaller bunch of rice farmers running around the jungle with AKs. I don't think they're even close to Russia's level of delusion to believe otherwise. Though this only applies to aggression, it seems that no current major power can win a conventional aggressive war against any other, they all can defend themselves.

@Amikke @Moon I think the main reason for that is tank warfare. It's hopelessly obsolete yet every "world power" insists on building and using tanks which are easily yeeted using IEDs, handheld infantry weapons and now drones.

@caekislove

Tanks are like battleships. They only work against peer adversaries. Much like modern fighter jets. Without a similar fighter by the enemy, we could get by with F-80 Shooting Stars if all we needed to do was shadow a suspicious airliner or intercept conventional bombers. And a supersonic bomber? Missiles and fuck you.

@Amikke @Moon

@caekislove @Amikke @Moon Tanks are like carriers. They're not useless but they're not ideal either. Western doctrine has overemphasized them because they're not actually serious about warfighting but instead over intraservice rivalries, just like the fighter/carrier jocks have largely prevailed over submarines. Soviet doctrine has known for a long time that artillery is king, and that it's better to attack from above than front on. Even before the era of guided ATGMs, artillery could crush tank formations as long as they had targeting info.
