I notice that we've reached a point in our society where people just believe scientists will solve everything. People ask me all of the time "Why haven't scientists solved climate change yet?" or "Why isn't there a pill for COVID yet?"
What's been normalized is that "science" will eternally make your life better and solve all of your problems without you doing anything to change your own life, and we're seeing the downside of that right now.
There's an expectation that science will make COVID magically go away without any understanding, learning, adjustment or effort on our part. Without any *change* at all on our part. Solutions that require substancial change are rejected.
Same thing the climate crisis. Even as straight up denial fades away, the pace of decarbonisation is essentially determined - in the best case - by how quickly alternatives can be found that are cost-competitive and require no change or trade-offs. The future be dammed, we are discounting it aggressively.
This is clearly not good enough.
