In this case he was merchant involved in business dealings around the Indian Ocean, so it’s not an unreasonable assumption. But the world he was moving in was *very* cosmopolitan—he would have had regular business dealings with people of many languages and religions.

@tkinias @Quatrus True, very cosmopolitan for that time is much more accurate. I am quite interested in this person now that I am looking into his history. Is there a good book or research paper on his life?

I’m not aware of any formal scholarship, but Amitav Ghosh wrote a book about him in the ’90s.

This isn’t my research field (it’s part of teaching the first-year world history survey), so I’m very much not up-to-date on the research.

@tkinias @Quatrus I did see that. I will try and get ahold of a copy, though it looks like it might be more like a historical fiction novel than a history book. Thanks!
