Alright, so there's people already explicitly hoping to see DNS and browser-level blocks of websites and platforms. Thinking that way you'll be able to actually get rid of violence and hate. That implies a will to control all communications, an assumption of its feasibility, an assumption that communicated information alone causes or is violence, and an assumption that you can eliminate specific/discrete sources of information, thus getting get rid of entire ideologies. Saying it's not censorship while also hoping to get rid of them all with blocks at all levels.

With a debate that sparked because Google is banning fedi apps https://mastodon.social/@Gargron/104763960269049818

Alright, are you seriously thinking of what you're saying?

Banning communication is dumb, but to play devil's advocate, most school shooters from several years ago spent most of their time on 4chan.org/b/. We need to find a good balance between freedom of speech and suppressing violent social contagion, the likes of which we have never seen before the internet.

@Demosthenes Yeah, the fact that they learn and organize in specific platforms certainly helps out spread hate and violence. But yeah, don't expect blocking will solve violence in the world.

@Demosthenes @xerz spending time on 4chan alone does not make a killer, otherwise about every 10th person on the internet since 2001 would just non-stop shooting people (and that’s police’s job!)

if teenagers have nothing else to do in the society other than hate school and everyone in it – thats when you get to the tipping point

@dym
This isn't a basic "videogames bad" argument. If someone reads propaganda about how evil the world is and how funny it is to an hero, this while lauding and praising school shooters, it makes sense that a higher percentage of those readers would then go on to shoot up schools compared to the general population.
