There's an odd social phenomenon tied to the "marketplace of ideas." It always starts with a stated intent to give voice to the marginalized, and it always ends with the establishment and protection of xenophobic hate speech against those same marginalized people.

We are broken.

@jovial_cynic Nonsense. The entire movement was the marketplace of ideas shutting down rapey establishment folks. So is every example of conservatives bitching about cancel culture.

The free marketplace of ideas does allow any idea to be presented, but it's up to us to debate these ideas and make sure the best ones rise to the top.

@LouisIngenthron what you are describing is what I believe it *should* be. But I think open debates are failing to bring the best ideas to the top. If they were successful, intellectuals would rule the world. Instead, big money is spent on advertising to appeal to the lowest common denominator, tapping into the psychology of fear and belonging. These primal human motivators tend to lead to the xenophobia I mentioned.

@LouisIngenthron I’m not advocating for a limit to the marketplace. I’m just pointing out that it is simple to exploit people within it.
