When McCain was the nominee I thought "Hot dog! One of the good ones!" even though I really liked Obama as well.
That certainly wasn't an opinion shared by everybody.The batshit base considered him dangerously "liberal," but I remember they still came around to voting for him.

I think that's a fundamental misunderstanding. If you ask the many people who are currently calling for a new lead on the ticket if they'd still vote for Biden should he remain the candidate, I think damn near 100% would say yes.
We can criticize and call for change but still fall in line when the chips are down.
