Thrilled to see the folks at Mastodon HQ have made the onboarding process easier for the official app. Does anyone know if these changes will be made to the website as well?

Authoritarian power grab.
Fuck that shit.
There are literally dozens of ways to do this. He's trying to be just another centralized platform like Twitter.
@Pat Are you serious? Eugen has proven himself to have good intentions.
Having to choose a server is the main reason so many people give up on Mastodon immediately. This is a simple solution.
>"Are you serious? Eugen has proven himself to have good intentions."
You know what they say about the road to hell...
>"Having to choose a server is the main reason so many people give up on Mastodon immediately."
Really? What study came to that conclusion? Who conducted that study?
That's like saying, "Oh, democracy is so hard, I can't chose a candidate. Please just give us dictator instead."
>"This is a simple solution."
Assuming there was an existential problem, in 20 seconds I could come up with a half dozen better solutions that would be more in line with the philosophy of Mastodon than a dictator assuming total control of everyone who comes into the Fedi...
- assign newbies to a random instance
- ask a couple of questions about the new user's preferences and assign them to an instance that matches those preferences
- show them sample toots from instances and let them click on the one they like
- let them supply their user name from another social media site and scan their status there and pick an instance based on that
and so on...
But he just happens to pick a "solution" that gives him all the power. This is after he has already arbitrarily banished qoto and a bunch of other instances from his list of instances. (qoto was in complete compliance with the requirements for being included on that list, but he unilaterally removed qoto and other sites without notice and with no transparency whatsoever.
No, based on what I've seen, he has not "proven himself to have good intentions."
I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but this move proves exactly what his intentions are.
>" guess if you're so concerned about his regime, you can move on."
I already did, when he de-federated qoto from his instance.
@Pat I am adult enough to admit that *maaaaybe* having mastodon.social as the default was, in hindsight, not the best idea. *gestures vaguely to spam*
I meant off of Mastodon but ok.
Shrug. I agree with this approach. It's easy to move to another instance when you're ready and it's a good way to get people in the door which is the most important thing.
