This was my first attempt at setting up a presence in Mastrodon. I picked this instance because of my engineering and teaching background. It’s only been about a week but it sure feels like home. All the noise of twitter is gone and people are civil to each other.
I started going online with a 300 baud dialup modem and visited bulletin boards. We exchanged ideas and wrote our own software. Then came AOL, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter…. It turned into a circus - with too many clowns.
I like it here, it feels vaguely familiar.
@trinsec Nice… do you remember when Hayes came out with their upgradable modem? They advertised it as the last you will ever need to buy. They used an EEPROM for their code. As updates (faster protocols) came out, they could download it to your modem. That was way out of my price range. I was spending all my money on 5 1/2 inch floppy disks. :)
@Pat_H I don't remember too much technical details about the hardware back then. I was just happy that I had a faster modem so I could have fun on BBSes easier.
@Pat_H I started with 2400 baud. Then I got fed up and paid too much for a 14k4 modem. ;)
