Exploring Mastodon, feels a bit like the pre-MySpace/Facebook/Twitter online world before the largest corporations took control and monetized us all, when we had our local or even online days with WBS chat and the like.

Liking it so far, appreciate the rules of the qoto.org instance

@SecondJon I'm glad your enjoying it. QOTO promises to never take corperate sponsors and never advertise. We also would silence fediverse accounts if they started doing that (it hasnt been a problem yet.

@SecondJon

I literally decided to finally check out this whole Mastadon thing for myself today and I'm both excited and confused by my experience so far. I don't know if I made the right decision for my home server tbh. Is there ways to streamline the process of interacting with people on other servers and how easy would it be to transfer accounts to other home servers?

Also, why am I taking you as an authority on the subject? Because - I have no idea actually.

@SecondJon Welcome! Federation sure is a blast from the past. The Fediverse is like email, except with point-to-point encryption, no hard coded and censorable port, and binary file transfers. Now we just need to go one step further and have public key trust anchors…

@SecondJon If you're as old as me, you'll remember logging in to #BBS via dialup modem back in the 80s. Mastodon has that kind of frontier vibe for me.

@Korsier
I loved the sound of that modem...even more when there wasn't a busy signal. :)
