I disagree with the notion that the bible was simplictic. In fact research into documents of the time, including the bible, shows very clearly a pattern of deep complexity to these messages that can take a great deal of expertise to understand.
A prime example of this are the intentional gematria messages built into passages. Its well documented with consensus among historians about the process, including in the bible. The result is that unless you learn the ancient languages including the gematria rules you will miss put on the complete message as it was written down.
That doesnt strike me as simple. Though again I respect your perspective.

I just wonder why the supposed "word of god" that is supposed to be the key to eternal salvation - is so disputed and having different interpretation by so many people.

I would expect the key to eternal salvation to be the MOST disputed thing, no matter how clear it is, if it disagrees with us at all. And as we're not all the same, no matter what it is, it'll be uncomfortable for some or all of us, and we'll try to ignore it or re interpret it.
