@tjemni I use Discord to speak to Specific People that I game with online, so it's more real-time chat between people I actually know for my use case. These are people I roleplay with via TelNet servers/Mush/Mux/Mu* worlds.

Before Mastodon I was never active on Facebook, or twitter- despite having accounts. I still have a FB account that is specifically to receive pictures of my niece and nephew from my sister. I don't use it for anything else.

I sometimes look at forums, and am a member of some small forums- but all of that feels less toxic than what I've gotten the last two weeks on Mastodon. I'm seeing some of the dark-side of social media, and I really don't like it.

It's as ugly as any other kind of hate I've experienced, and it comes from so many directions. It's really very confusing to me- I don't understand how so many people are so angry that they lash out at anyone who talks to them that isn't part of their 'social bubble'.

I'm not about to lash out at anyone, but I'll probably be less interested in posting in other communities going forward. is good for me. I like the people here and I like the conversations I've had, regardless of opinions. We've got a mostly good crowd here, imho.

@Surasanji
Hey, a Mudder! :D
Omph. That sucks you're having a hard time navigating the fediverse :< Honestly I think the trick is finding a few good relays, it helps moderate the tone of the federated timeline, but it's still a rather massive network and the divisions are real so I feel you there.

I'm hoping it gets better for you though, especially given that you've volunteered to help moderate your instance. It's a hard slog and it definitely puts you front and center in the line of the harsher social dynamics. Thanks for taking up some of that responsibility.
