I am trying to find a good screen reader and text to speech feature on GNU/Linux just like the on that is built into MacOS .
I want to be able to highlight text on any application (e.g. word processor or website) and then click a short cut key to hear it read out to me.
I appreciate your suggestions.

I'm not sure that what you're looking for exists, at lest it dosn't seem so from this article [http://blog.michaelamerz.com/wordpress/the-state-of-the-art-linux-text-to-speech-tts/] -- I haven't checked in the documentation and repositories for the distro I use (Open SUSE).
