Putin is aware of the discontent of the Russian people who have been affected by the war in Ukraine, so he is avoiding them out of fear. The population of Russia largely supports the attack on Ukraine, they just don't want their own children sent off for it. My sympathy for Russians is now gone, and I'm just left with disgust and loathing.
