On November 19, 1997, the space shuttle Columbia embarked on a mission from the Kennedy Space Center, marking a significant milestone for Ukraine as it carried Leonid Kadenyuk, Ukraine's first and, to date, only astronaut, as part of an international endeavor.

Beyond conducting scientific research, Kadenyuk aimed to elevate Ukraine's global presence, symbolized by bringing the Ukrainian flag, coat of arms, portraits of Taras Shevchenko, and Serhiy Korolev aboard the shuttle. His mission also resulted in the Ukrainian national anthem being played in space—a historic moment.

Upon his return, Kadenyuk was hailed as a national hero. He later served as an advisor on aviation and cosmonautics to state leadership and became a member of the Verkhovna Rada. Throughout his life, he remained concerned about the perceived insufficient progress in developing Ukraine's rocket and space industry.
