G7 members are ready to ban Iran Air from flying to Europe if Tehran hands over short-range ballistic missiles to Moscow.

The US is said to have joined its six G7 allies in issuing a statement warning Iran against sending missiles to Russia or face consequences.

"If Iran continues to supply Russia with ballistic missiles or related technologies, we are ready to respond quickly and in a coordinated manner, including with new and significant measures against Iran," the G7 statement said.

The United States is reacting increasingly aggressively to Iran's support for militants in the region who carry out attacks on American bases and to Tehran's alleged hacking of American infrastructure.

A senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said one option being considered by the G7 would be to end Iran Air's flights to Europe.
