🇪🇪🇱🇹🇱🇻The Baltic states are calling on other NATO members to step up preparations for a possible armed confrontation with Russia, namely to reintroduce conscription and introduce a special defense tax

This was reported by the Financial Times.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs said that the return of compulsory military service in NATO countries would allow for the formation of more capable reserve forces to deter Russia, although this idea may prove unpopular with the population.

At the same time, Estonian President Alar Karis has called for the introduction of a special tax to finance military procurement, so that Europe can at least catch up with the United States in terms of defense spending.

In 2023, the United States spent $860 billion on defense, while European allies and Canada spent $404 billion.
