You turn a knob to an (approximate) temperature. Electricity heats an element and you use the old thermometer on the inside to check if it's pre heated.

@Vo Reminds me of those little kitchen timers... *RrrrrRRRRRrrrr* Double the noise, still better than appliances that want to have internet access. The break-even is when you'd rather have no appliance at all.
