there must be more futile efforts than criticizing someone for self harm. Whatcha gonna do, at worst, harm them as punishment?

@livinghell From a capitalist perspective, that would be evil. You'd be taking their job.
From the perpetuated mistreatment perspective though, it's trivial. You learn mistreatment, you harm who will not resist. Futile for sure, but not surprising as humans learn what they are taught.
