Automatic volume control has always sounded like a great idea. Stop loud noises from blowing out your eardrums while keeping dialog audible. I never understood why everyone hates it.

Until I finally heard a common automatic volume control.

It still plays the loud noise just as loud, but then turns the volume of the following dialog down to inaudible levels.

...Right, I forgot, we're dealing with humans here. I don't know why I thought we could make something that actually works.

@OpenComputeDesign I wonder why mess up and fix instead of not messing up in the first place.
All instances where i would have liked such a fix (if it would work) were when movies were mixed like loud music, whisper dialogue to begin with. Maybe that way of mixing sound should be an extra track, labelled Id-10-t and the default should be a reasonable mix. If i want my ears to hurt from the music, the people talking can shout, too.
