Ok #SoCal #Camping folks: at Anza-Borrego, do you recommend Tamarisk Grove or Borrego Palm Canyon for tent car camping? I prefer easy access to walks/hikes, and quiet & space over running water or fancy restrooms. I’ll be coming in from birding at the Salton Sea. (And I know there are other sites, but I need a guaranteed spot, and I also don’t want my little prius c to get stuck). ⛺️

Definitely Borrego Palm Canyon. Lovely hike to the palms, lots of rock scrambling places and short drives to other hikes. Make reservations, might already be full. @cbdawson

@agterrane Thanks for the suggestion! It does fill up ahead, seems like everything does now. I hate making reservations but I am trying to change my ways. Cramps my style, I prefer to go with the flow during my desert trips and to move around as fancy strikes.

@cbdawson There are lots of primitive campgrounds in the area. (I don't remember their names, haven't lived down there for 50 years). They should show up on the maps.

@agterrane I had planned on doing that last time & scoped some out. They seemed designed for RVs and not reliably accessible by a tiny prius, unfortunately. (I take my car lots of questionable places, but it’s really light so soft sand is a ~guaranteed trap. )

@cbdawson Yeah, the Prius is really low-- it's for the aerodynamics, I think. I won't take ours off road.

Now that I think about it, I had gone camping at one of those primitive campgrounds with a bunch of friends. I was driving my Dad's truck, and almost got stuck in a sand wash. 😂 All I could think was "keep going, keep going straight or we're gonna be digging out (do we have any boards in the camper?)"

You may have to break down and get a hybrid small suv.
