I suppose one downside of using #emacs is that if it doesn't start one morning, I feel like I might as well have lost my right hand

If #Emacs doesn't start, run it from the CLI with the command emacs -q. If even that does not work, try emacs -Q (capital Q).
May your beloved diety help you if you use Doom, Prelude, or Spacemacs and you cannot remember the default Emacs keybindings.
And this is a good reason for why you really should use the default Emacs keybindings. Seriously they are really not that much less efficient than Vi's modal key bindings.
