I wrote a thing about Tools and Materials: A Mental Model for #AI. Then I asked #chatgpt to rewrite it at a 4th grade reading level. Here are both articles:

Sometimes we’ll use #AI as tools the same way we use our phones and computers and the apps on them as tools. Sometimes we’ll use them and what they produce as materials the same way we use printed fabrics and code snippets to create things.

#AI are regurgitation machines echoing our own works back to us. And just like we are drawn to our own image every time we pass a mirrored surface, we are drawn to the echoes of ourselves in the output of these machines.

#AI are great at doing shallow rote work, but they have no ability to bring anything new to the table. They lack creativity and ingenuity and lateral thinking skills because these skills require intelligence. And AIs are not intelligent; they just play intelligent on TV.

@mor10 how many times as an undergrad and even in my master's program did a prof give me feedback that amounted to "you have not studied the topic enough to have original thoughts, please just stick to analysis of the existing literature." It seems very much like the AI is doing exactly what academic culture expects of students - a shallow analysis of existing thoughts.
