@davidtoddmccarty Maybe it’s because I’m reading this biography of Frederick Douglass but they kind of remind me of the disunionist abolitionists, who advocated for nonvoting because all political parties were complicit in slavery.

The disunionists collapsed and didn’t really help free the slaves (needless to say): the political abolitionists who became a significant voting and political bloc eventually forced the confrontations that ended slavery.

@MisuseCase @davidtoddmccarty Of course at the time Lincoln was elected he was the part of a new . The Republican Party was formed as a northern party dedicated to antislavery, drawing from the antislavery wing of the Whig Party and combining Free Soil, Liberty, and antislavery Democratic Party members. Perhaps we should be like the political abolitionists and not choose between parties who no longer represent our values -- if they ever did.
