@ujcmtgs4n4jqza It's going... well, I'm improving, but I've only recently started (like 6 months ago) both with singing and banjo playing. This quarantine surely is helping me, I have more time to practice.

Do you play any music?

@arteteco @ujcmtgs4n4jqza
I started guitar... I don't know... maybe '73. Over the years, there were long periods of time when I didn't play. Broken fingers one time, I couldn't even play if I wanted to for well over 18 months.

Last year I sang and played a few times at an open mic. It was a good experience. One thing I learned was that many artists have sound compressors and various other electronica on a board that goes between the mic/instrument and the amp to improve the sound.

Another big lesson: Record yourself and listen back. You'll hear mistakes you'll never notice while just singing in the shower/closet. You'll never know what you need to work on if you don't hear it.

Also, get a decent microphone. The difference between a $7 "karaoke" mic and even a ~$25 vocal mic is huge (I used the karaoke mic for over a year. Once I upgraded, I was sorry I ever bought the cheap one.)

Maybe more than you're ready for yet? Anyway, stop thinking about sharing and do it!

🙂

Hi, thanks for your message!
18 months without playing nothing must be... difficult.

I already do all you are saying! I record myself and listen, and I bought a 50 bucks Rode microphone.

I also started just today to upload some videos of me playing. Well, just one, so far.

More than to get attention, it is motivating me to look for errors and things to improve... and also I'm trying to let go of my anxiousness.

Do you have any video or audio of you playing?

I'm pretty sure you already saw the last song I did at the last open mic I went to. (I might have said something about the videographer needing training)

Here's a more recent one using some of that sound board electronica I was talking about. I notice as I trail off in volume, I also fall a little flat on a few notes, something I'm working on...

Are those songs originals of yours?
I really liked the first one, too bad for the audio quality and people chatting around...

The second one is also nice, the voice sound is a bit funny, is that the effects you are referring to?

You do sing and play good, it's nice to hear, and it's a music genre I appreciate. If you happen to have a better version of the first one I'd like to hear it!

I've uploaded again the same song as yesterday I did one too many slips on the rhythm... having the camera in front of me makes me a bit anxious!

This is the link, it's on my peertube channel:

Joy to the World was written by Hoyt Axton, made famous by Three Dog Night.
People chatting and room noise are just a fact of playing where alcohol/food is served. That happens to be the recording with the least amount of room noise, so about the only open mic vid I've ever shared. The rest are way noisier.

Flies in the Butter was written and performed by the Judds.
I used a voice effect (basically it synthesizes your own voice to sing along in unison) for the verses, and a harmony voice a third up for the chorus. I tried to keep it subtle... maybe I kept the harmony voice a little too subtle.

Glad you like Joy to the World.
I'll see about doing a cleaner version.

Rhythm is important if you're playing with other people, but I view it the same as melody... open to improvisation when solo. Nice banjo playing. Is the title supposed to be "Concerning Hobbits?"

@sda

I'll go listen to those songs, and thanks for the heads up I updated the song title!

First and only take. OMB guitar and FNK840 mic into TC Helicon HarmonyG XT, into a Behringer Q1202USB into an old laptop running ~7 year-old Audacity. No effects added. Audacity post "normalized" and "noise removal." Maybe 20 seconds after the end, I added an "alternate ending" with a bass + 3rd harmony.
