Taking a break, for at least two weeks, from completely. is a lot more addictive than in my opinion because there are so many obscure and to discover. And this place is gonna be a lot noisier than usual for a while, and probably and as well.

“Being ok with sucking at something while learning” is an extremely undervalued skill.
As is “being happy for people that are better than you”.
Super important for
- learning how to code
- learning a new language
- art, music, podcasting, cooking
- really everything.
Don’t forget to teach your kids these skills.
Also, demonstrate these behaviors.
Let your kids see you being bad at something and not giving up and staying positive.

Does anyone know a good article that describes all anti-aliasing technologies? I keep forgetting which one does what, and I keep needing to search for references. I'd rather have 1 article bookmarked, that contains info and comparisons with all of them.

@comrade_lecter @riotblush the coomer is an exaggerated meme that was definitely not made seriously. the grand majority of people who use it do so because he's a funny character. it doesn't really seem fair to claim that this funny little meme guy is somehow an evil alt right anti sex symbol

32 years ago today Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau emailed colleagues outlining a proposal for a hypertext project that they dubbed "World Wide Web".

@molly0xfff IBM were paying coders by the line in the mid '80s, right around the time they released OS/2. And just look how well they're doing today in the personal computer and PC operating system market...

@NewtonMark They haven't figured out yet that mastodon.social is the stamping grounds for the OGs of the elephant app.

@stevelord @eloquence Three other things I'm 99.9% sure is happening right now is:

1) Social media consultants are already figuring out why their clients need a Mastodon presence right now.

2) A consultant will say the following within the next 24 hours: "Oh yes, a major brand like yours definitely needs its own instance. Let me help guide your journey on that."

3) Social media marketing managers within big brands are gearing up "authentic engagement" strategies.

You will also hear some variation on the phrase "Mastodon users are tech-savvy and particularly oriented to grassroots forms of community, so it's important to make sure your brand/engagement/message is authentic" within the next year.

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.
