What you should know before a event?

The packing list is a requirement and in most events the organizer (aka Cadre) will check if every participant has brought everything.

If you failed to bring an item, the team (you and the other participants) will pay for it and love you afterwards.

Thus some participants take extra and check if everyone brought the packing list.

Some items are illogical to have like a headlamp during a day event and even in this situation better safe than sorry.

The consequence of constantly being reminded/required to take the packing list items, puts you into a routine of subconsciously taking it everywhere.

Some of the items that I always have with me are:

  • IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit)
  • headlamp with extra batteries
  • power bank with USB cable
  • hydration either via bottle or bladder

How does GORUCK try to popularize rucking?

They try to do this in three main ways:

  1. They offer equipment and apparel to ease your rucking experience.
  2. They offer events where Cadre from various U.S. special forces areas lead events with a core focus on rucking.
  3. They offer the idea of to create s.

These three ways interlink with one another by having the community keeping you in check of your basic fitness level and giving you resources to prepare for the next event.

The events teaching you various skills that you can use outside of the sandbox event experience from mental fortitude to and skills. Where as the apparel and equipment marketed as the ideal gear for such events.

And apparel and gear being worn by the participants while being freely marketed by them as well.

Caveat: the apparel and gear is quite pricey though it has lifetime warranty.

What kind of events exist?

There are two types of events: individualistic and as a team.

Examples of individualistic ones are:

  • Selection, a 48h event of you against the Cadre with a success rate of less than 1%.
  • Buddy Assessment, you and a buddy tackle a 48h event against the Cadre.

Examples of team ones are:

  • Basic, 6h event,
  • Tough, 12h event,
  • Heavy, 24h event,
  • etc.

After successfully achieving an event, you get a patch.

Further there are combination events, which are not directly mentioned on the GORUCK’s event page. These are events that are structured within a small time frame like a weekend. E.g.:

  • HTB, Heavy Tough Basic
  • HH, double Heavy
  • BBB, triple Basic
  • STB, Star course (long distance scavenger hunt) Tough Basic

These events are for those who want an additional challenge and usually there is an additional patch.

Who should do a event?

GORUCK events are for anyone who wants to learn in a sandbox environment.

In team events, and are in the forefront of learnings, though also putting yourself in uncomfortable situations and see if the obstacle will break you.

For lots just showing up is a hurdle to overcome, since you are intently putting yourself in an unfamiliar situation.

Then initially you will meet lots of strangers with lots of different personalities and beliefs. These are your team mates for the next x hours. Can they rely on you or are you able to rely on them.

A basic requirement is for each participant to carry their load to their current capacity. This doesn’t just mean to stubbornly carry your load to failure, but also be open for help and let your mate help you out. Because if you cannot continue further then you become an additional burden for the team. Sometimes it is wise to swallow your pride and/or ego to not become a hindrance.

Most people are not born leaders and everyone can benefit from practicing leadership in the field. On the flip side, lots that think that they are good leaders can benefit from being lead. This is an area of learning of knowing when it is the right time to step up your game and when to lay back.

The harmony between being the delegator and delegatee creates the best dynamic to get the team the furthest. And the team is only as strong as its weakest member.
