@bibliolater @archaeodons
There is a class of chemicals PFAS discovered following nuclear tests which were used for nonstick cooking. They cause sterility. It is said that on drop in an Olympic size pool is an unsafe amount. It's being found in human tissue all over the world.
@bibliolater definitely a problem however there's some evidence that bacteria in landfills and in the warmer parts of the ocean are learning to digest plastics.
Some of the enzymes being developed to break down plastics back down to oil have come from the wax worms that attack bee hives and from these types of bacteria.
When these enzymes are more readily available, refineries will be able to take in waste plastics, turn it back to oil and refine it instead of using fresh fossil oil.
