One cool thing about changing jobs in the States is that you get new health insurance, which means—on top of other frustrations—that your deductible and coinsurance reset. So all that money I spent at urgent care and the hospital when I had pneumonia last winter? Gone. Doesn’t count. Deductible restarts at zero—even though it’s the same damn insurance company. I have to spend another $4,000 out of pocket before full coverage kicks in again.

@tkinias A system that some would like to introduce in the UK.

@bibliolater
The only way somebody would advocate that is if (a) they have never actually experienced the U.S. healthcare system, or (b) they are rich enough that they will always have gold-plated private insurance and can always just pay cash for whatever comes up if necessary.

Nobody who has experienced the U.S. system and actually has to rely on health insurance so as not to die will want to import this mess.

@tkinias I think you may be onto something about the most vociferous voices in favour of the move are those that have the access and the means to gold-plated health insurance cover.

@bibliolater
and (at the risk of being excessively cynical about the whole thing) the capital to invest in for-profit healthcare enterprises...

@tkinias Just an added bonus being able to turn a profit out of the situation.
