Will we ever witness a #Bluesky #migration wave to #Mastodon?
@Ciantic Will that be a good or bad for Mastodon?
@bibliolater Depending how it is done, it probably won't be visible to ActivityPub users at all? It would be just one extra "visibility" flag when you post, if you want to send it to Bluesky as well.
Following would work very same way.
@bibliolater The biggest red flag for me is that Bluesky has VC backing and they will eventually need a return on their investment. There needs to be a monetization plan for Bluesky and it's not apparent what that is. FWIW, Twitter also couldn't figure this out which is why they decided to sell to Elon. So the point being ... if that monetization/profitability strategy had really bad impacts on users, then we might see a migration to the Fediverse. But I don't think this would happen for years.
@undefined @badbede I cannot say that I disagree with your analysis.
@bibliolater BTW, the funding strategy for Mastodon is pretty straightforward. First, it's an open source project so has volunteer development, but there's also the non-profit organization that's supported by user donations. But individual instances are also user-run, so we each should be doing our part to support our respective instances. This is a sustainable model, IMHO. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon_(social_network)
@bibliolater Probably.
No.
People in numbers will never trust anything that hasn't got a huge corporation behind.
The same goes for journalists and media people.
@bibliolater It's more likely we will see modified Mastodon servers with full Bluesky support. Then one could migrate between Bluesky servers.
