it seems like historically sugar was the equivalent of 20th century heroin — very expensive, detrimental to the health, and produced very unethically
potato, BTW, is nutritionally about the same as sugar and also appeared in Europe around the same time
my guess is that in the future opiates will be mass produced and traded absolutely legally,and their consumption will be mostly normalised, despite the adverse side effects

@bonifartius @genmaicha potatos, grains, and breads — these are all mostly "fast" carbohydrates — good to provide energy, if you need it right now, but for not much else
