Voters mostly see 'long term' as 5-10 years, and so when the 'real' long-term of 50 years is discussed voters are often dismissive of such benefits as too far away.

If the political class see things differently (which they often do) then a democratic disconnect ensues.

politicians see the inside of their own pockets.

the benefit of "long term" in current politricks is that politicians can't be judged for the effects as they likely will be dead by then but still can be bribed for these decisions.
