come to think of it communists also didn't like cybernetics either.

:blobcatnerd: we can do everything scientifically
communist: :neofox_gun: no i want to be the supreme leader
capitalist: :neofox_gun: no i want to be the oligarch
Allende's computer: I alone am not powerful enough to manage the entire Chilean economy, but I have created a system which is. I call this new system, Pinochet.
@cjd @bonifartius the cia tried to stage a soft coup with their union strike playbook and cybersyn immediately solved around it.

pinochet was basically stage 2 of the economic hitman book
While most things the CIA has ever done were atrocious, Pinochet was, by the numbers, positive for Chile.
@cjd @bonifartius not in the slightest.

allende openly told everyone what they would get, and they voted for that, and he did it.
@cjd @bonifartius perhaps one of the only times where socialism/communism was literally consented and not the result of massacres.

this was just capitalism doing the massacre to reassert itself.
I have pretty much no confidence in the electoral process to make good decisions. People elected Nicolás Maduro, people elected Robert Mugabe, people elected Hitler.

The economy of Chile was going down the drain, and Pinochet arguably saved it, which was a lot better for a lot more people than the alternative.

And lastly, throwing a few thousand communist agitators out of helicopters could be called a massacre if you want, but you can't compare it to the mass genocide in USSR, China, Cambodia, etc. And if you hear somebody trying to make that comparison, you have to call it out, because either they're just not aware of the difference of scale, or they're actively trying to muddy the water and they're a genocide apologist.
@cjd @bonifartius people also un-elected maduro and he proceeded to enact a military takeover to defy this.
In decision making, you only have to be wrong once.
@cjd @bonifartius the real mistake was giving up their guns :neocat_woozy: never disarm yourself. kill everyone who tries to make you.
That is true, and an armed populous reduces the risk a lot. Governments end up having to *quietly* go rogue, like we see in the US, rather than just saying "I'm president for life, fite me".
